Sinhgad  is a historical, heritage center of Pune.  Sinhgad fort has historic importance for Maharashtra and Chatrapati Shivaji. It is located at 25 km south of Pune city. The fort stands perched on an isolated hill of the Bhuleswar range of the Sahyadri Mountains, at an altitude of approximately 700 m above the landscape that surrounds it. Hill has given natural protection by its very steep slopes. The walls and bastions that were constructed at only key places.

It has two gates – the Kalyan Darwaza in the south-east and the Pune Darwaza in the north-east. The Sinhgad fort is also strategically located at the center of a string of other forts such as Rajgad, Purandar and Torna.
 The fort is also part of training at National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla.

During the 20th century, Lokmanya Tilak, the Indian freedom fighter, built a bungalow atop the fort. Also, Gandhiji is said to have asked for water from it whenever he was imprisoned in the Pune. The samadhi of Rajaram Maharaj, son of Chatrapati Shivaji can also be found on this fort.
Previously this fort is called Kondana. This fort is witness of many important battles, most notably the battle of Sinhgad in 1670. During battle of a night Tanaji Malusare, a general in Shivaji’s army, recaptured the fort. The name Sinhgad is given after the bravery of Tanaji. Sinh means Lion and Tanaji was like Lion of Shivaji’s army.

    Now days it is all the favorite place of tourism and picnic. The hilly area of singhad gives panoramic background to Pune city. Sinhgad can be easily sighted form many parts of Pune. It is good place for trekking. All the days of year people visit to Sinhgad but monsoon and winter seasons are special. Just coming out of city one can experience fresh air and great sensory over here. One can enjoy peaceful environment during odd days.

    In monsoon it get coved by clouds giving pictorial view. In each monsoon (June -Sept) the greenery and the small water falls attracts nature lover to Sinhgad. During winter and summer the food like Sweet curd, Buttermilk, Kanda Bhaji and Pithle-Bhakari which is served by locals  is the main attraction for the people. 
From hill of Sinhgad one can see water body of Khadakwasla and Varasgaon Dams. Also forts like Rajgad and Torana are visible form Sinhgad.

How to reach Sinhgad

There is a steep and narrow two lane road from the base of the fort to the top. The local Municipal transport service, the PMPML runs buses every hour from Shanivarwada and Swargate to the Sinhgad foothills. The climbing route from either side of the fort can be covered in around an hour; however it gets slippery in the rainy season. Shared taxi services to the base as well as the top of the mountain are also available.

Khadakwasala dam

    From Pune on the way of Sinhgad there is pictorial lake formed by Khadakwasala dam. It is nice place of site seeing and favorite place of couples. There is chupati parallel to Sinhgad road where all kinds of chats are served.
