Tapovan, Veda Mandir and Jain Mandir in Nashik


    Once a part of the holy Dandakaranya forest, Tapovan is a pictorial spot and has a close association with the epic Ramayana. Tapovan literally means precincts reserved for meditation and penance. It was reserved for rumination and reparation. Besieged in the richness of lush greenery, Tapovan presents a tranquil ambience This place might be used by great sages for meditation.

    It is believed that Laxmana - brother of Rama - used to stay here and had cut nose of Shurpanakha - sister of Ravana. This sacred place has temples of Laxmana and Hanuman. This stunning locale enthralls the tourists mind with Godavari’s noiselessly babbling stream, long stretch of green woods and proximity to jungle’s flora and fauna.

    Very close by, is the Kapil Tirth. On the right bank of Godavari, there are eleven rocky cavernous spaces where rishi-munis must have been retreating for sacraments.There are temples of Gopalkrishna and Lakshmi-Narayan.

Veda Mandir

    Nashik also has schools where Vedas are taught. One of the Vedas Schools in Nashik is  Shri Kailas Math or Veda Mandir. This institution is one of the old religious institutions, statrted on  19th December 1920.
    Vedas education is restricted only to Brahmins in Kailas Math. Brahmin boys in the age group of 10 to  15 years are admitted  in the Math. The education is free of charge.  Since Nashik Brahmin community is mostly "Yajurvedi", mainly Yajurveda is  taught in Kailas Math. Apart from the resident students, 25 non-resident students from Nashik are also enrolled in this school.Accommodation, meals etc. are also  provided free by the Trust.The medium of instructions is Sanskrit. The students are expected to remain in the religious atmosphere and  not allowed to go out. Instead, if possible, guardians come to visit students.
    Students lead a very disciplined life. Their routine starts before sunrise and ends at 10.30 in the night. The religious chores like "Sandhya" - recital of Sanskrit prayers including Gayatri Mantra, recital of Vedas, homework, Yoga, reading of religious books and scriptures are a part of their studies. Kailas  Math relates with the ancient "Gurukula" of India. The students are exepected to promote Vedas.

Jain Mandir

Shree Dharmachakra Prabhav Tirth or popularly known as Jain Mandir. The  three storied temple is built up using marble and pink sandstone. As in other jain mandir it has idoles of 24 thirthankaras. The architecture of mandir is outstanding. Choumukhji and Ashtapadji are other notable idols  in the temple. The temple has a hall for sermons and meditation, called Pravachan Hall.
