Shree Mahalaxmi Kolhapur


Temple of Shree Mahalaxmi or Ambabai

                It is Hindu Temple of goddess Mahalaxmi or Ambabai.  This Temple is build by King Karnadev of Chalukya family in A. C. 636.


There is another tale says that Mahalaxmi had defeated devil 'Kolhasur'. This temple is build by Kolhasur to show is devotion towards Devi.  Mahalaxmi Ambabai  given him blessing that the name of  town would be remembered after his name. So the name of city is 'Kolhapur' which is derived from 'Kolhasur'.  Temple has great Architecture of basalt rock. It has many columns beautified by sculptures. At front side a mandap is build it is called as Garud Mandap.  There are four gates (Dwar) to enter temple premises, namely 'Maha Dwar or Paschim Dwar' (at West), Uttar , Purv and Dakshine.

    The Temple is surrounded by may small temples of Gods like Shree Atibaleshwar (Shiva),  Shree Vishnu, Shree Ganesh, Shree Dattatraya, Shree Vittal. The temple premises has some holy trees like 'Pimpal' and Banyan. Near by there are other temples like The Navagraha Mandir and Jotiba Mandir, Kartikeya Mandir. The Statue of 'Sant Gadage Maharaj'  is near by Mahalaxmi Mandir. At entry point of Mandir there is idol of God Ganesha which has glassy look. Before 'Pitali Ubharta'  (Doorstep) there is Mahalaxmi Yantra. Inside temple one can make 'Pradakshina' of goddess.


Shree Mahalaxmi

                 Mahalaxmi or Ambabai is famous deity of India.  It is goddess of wealth and prosperity.  The deity of  Karvir (Kolhapur) is famous in all India. It is one of  ‘Shaktipeet’ of Maharashtra.  It is kulswamini of many Indian homes. Ambabai is wife of God Balaji ( Venkateshshwar of Tirupati, Andrapradesh). Devotees visit Kolhapur to pray Goddess Ambabai (Mahalaxmi) for a peaceful & healthy life. It is considered that the darshan of Shri. Balaji of Tirumala is incomplete without visiting goddess Mahalaxmi of Kolhapur.
    
    Large number of devotees visit to temple daily. The special days are Friday and Tuesday. The main festival is 'Navaratri Dhasara' , 'Kirnostsav' (Sun ray festival) and 'Rathostav' (Cart festival).
